What is Cost per Task?
What one finished piece of work really costs with AI: tokens, tools, retries and the human time to check it.
Price lists show cost per token or per seat. Decisions need something different: what does it cost to get one useful result, such as one summarised contract, one qualified lead, one answered support ticket? That number includes all the inference calls an agent makes, failed attempts and retries, tool and hosting fees, and the time a person spends reviewing.
Cost per task makes options comparable. A cheaper model that needs two retries and more checking can be more expensive per task than a pricier model that gets it right the first time.
Why it matters for you
It turns "AI is expensive" or "AI is free" into a business case. Compare it with the current cost of doing the task by hand, and you know whether automating, augmenting or leaving it alone makes sense.
Own it
Measure it for your top three use cases and track it over time. With that number you can negotiate with providers, decide when model routing is worth it, and notice early when an agent quietly gets more expensive.
Where it comes from
There is no single coiner: the idea comes from classic unit economics, the cost of producing one unit of value. In AI it became a headline metric in December 2024, when the ARC Prize published results with a "Cost/Task" column and declared that efficiency, such as compute cost, is now a required metric next to the score. A model that is smarter but far pricier per task is not automatically the better choice.
