AI Vocabulary · 08 Rules & Responsibility
What is Human Oversight?
The legal and practical duty that people can monitor, understand and override an AI system.
Human oversight means that competent people can watch what an AI system does, understand its outputs well enough to judge them, and step in: correct, override or stop it. For high-risk AI, the EU AI Act requires systems to be designed for this and deployers to assign trained people to it.
Oversight is broader than a single approval step. It includes knowing a system's limits, watching for the tendency to trust the machine too much, and having the authority and the means to say no.
Why it matters for you
Oversight only works if people have time, training and permission to disagree with the AI. A reviewer who approves 300 cases an hour is not overseeing anything.
Own it
Design every AI workflow with a clear owner: a person who is accountable for its results and can pause it. Responsibility can't be delegated to software.
Where it comes from
"Human agency and oversight" was the first of seven requirements in the EU's Ethics Guidelines for Trustworthy AI, published by the High-Level Expert Group on AI in April 2019. The EU AI Act turned the idea into a legal requirement for high-risk AI in Article 14, including that people must be able to override or stop a system.
