What is Orchestration?
The logic that coordinates models, tools and agents: who does which step, in what order, and what happens when something fails.
Orchestration is the conductor of an AI system. It decides which model handles which request, which tools are called in which order, how results are passed between agents, and what happens on errors, timeouts or unexpected answers. It can be simple code, a workflow automation tool or a dedicated agent framework.
Good orchestration is where much of the reliability of an AI product comes from: retries, fallbacks to another model, guardrails and checkpoints for people all live here.
Why it matters for you
When an AI product works in a demo but fails in daily use, the cause is often orchestration, not the model. Understanding this layer helps you ask better questions of vendors and your own team.
Own it
Orchestration is where you encode your rules: which data goes to which provider, when a person must approve, which cheaper model handles simple tasks through model routing. Keeping this logic in your hands is a big part of owning your AI.
Where it comes from
The word comes from music: arranging many instruments into one performance. Computing borrowed it in the 2000s for coordinating services, and it became famous with container tools like Kubernetes, which Google open-sourced in 2014 (Wikipedia). In AI, orchestration now means coordinating models, tools and agents into one working system.
