AI Vocabulary · 06 Own Your AI
What is Personal Knowledge Base?
Your own organised collection of notes, decisions and documents. The context that makes AI useful for you specifically.
A personal knowledge base is where your own know-how lives in written form: notes, meeting decisions, playbooks, examples of good work, client background, your opinions on how things should be done. It can be a folder of documents, a notes app or a wiki. What matters is that you can find things and hand them over.
AI models know a lot about the world in general and nothing about you. The difference between a generic answer and a useful one is almost always context: your situation, your standards, your history. A well-kept knowledge base is the supply of that context, whether you paste it in, attach it to a project, or connect it through RAG.
Why it matters for you
Everyone has access to the same models. Your edge is what you can give them: years of experience, your way of working, your customers' language. Writing that down turns tacit knowledge into something AI can actually use, and something your team can use too.
Own it
Keep your knowledge base in plain, portable formats such as text, Markdown or standard documents, stored where you control it. Then any model, today's or next year's, can work with it, and no single app's memory holds your know-how hostage. Your context is your most valuable AI asset; treat it like intellectual property.
Where it comes from
The dream is old. In 1945 Vannevar Bush described the memex, a desk that would store a person's books, records and notes with linked trails, in his essay As We May Think. The sociologist Niklas Luhmann later wrote his books with a Zettelkasten of tens of thousands of linked index cards. Today's "second brain" apps continue that line.
