What is Prototype?
A quick, rough version of an idea that you can actually click, test and show to people before building it properly.
A prototype is a working sketch: an app, a workflow or a page that does just enough to show how something would work. It is meant to be learned from and then improved or thrown away, not to run your business.
AI has made prototypes dramatically cheaper. With vibe coding, no-code tools or a coding agent, a founder can build a clickable version in hours instead of briefing an agency for weeks. That changes when and how you test ideas: you can show users something real instead of a slide.
Why it matters for you
A prototype turns a discussion into evidence. Instead of debating what customers might want, you put something in front of them and watch what they do. That is faster, cheaper and more honest feedback.
Own it
Decide upfront what the prototype is for and what it is not. Don't let a quick experiment quietly become your production system, with real data and no review. When it proves its value, rebuild or harden it deliberately.
Where it comes from
The word comes from the Greek prōtotypon, "first form". In software, Fred Brooks made the idea famous in his 1975 classic The Mythical Man-Month with the advice to "plan to throw one away", because the first version teaches you what the real one should be (Wikipedia). AI tools have made that first version faster and cheaper than ever.
