What is Structured Output?

Asking a model to answer in a fixed format, such as a table or JSON, so software and spreadsheets can use the result directly.

Advanced

By default a model answers in free text. Structured output means requiring a precise format instead: a table with fixed columns, or JSON with defined fields like name, date and amount. Many APIs can enforce a schema so the response always has the expected shape.

This is what turns AI from a chat partner into a component of a process. Extracted invoice data can flow straight into accounting, classified tickets into your helpdesk, and steps of a workflow automation can pass clean data to each other.

Why it matters for you

If a person has to copy and paste AI answers into another system, structured output can remove that step. A fixed format also reduces the impact of non-determinism, because answers can be checked automatically.

Own it

Define the format yourself, based on your own systems and fields. That keeps your data model in your hands, and makes it easy to switch the model behind it.

Where it comes from

Developers long asked models to "reply in JSON" and hoped for the best. OpenAI turned this into a product feature called Structured Outputs in August 2024, which forces a model's response to match a schema you define (Introducing Structured Outputs). Other providers and open-source tools offer similar guarantees, often called constrained decoding.
