AI Vocabulary · 04 Building with AI
What is Vertical AI?
AI applications built for one industry, with its data, rules and language, such as law, health or real estate.
Horizontal AI helps with many tasks across industries, like a general chat assistant. Vertical AI goes deep into one industry. A legal tool knows contract structures and court documents; a medical scribe knows clinical vocabulary and the format of patient records. Investors name Harvey, Legora and EvenUp in law and Abridge and OpenEvidence in health as examples.
The categories come from investors and overlap. Menlo Ventures estimates that US companies spent $3.5 billion on vertical AI applications in 2025, about $1.5 billion of it in healthcare, against $8.4 billion on horizontal tools.
Why it matters for you
Vertical products can own what general assistants lack: domain data, workflows and the trust of a regulated industry. Many vertical uses, such as hiring, credit or education, count as high-risk AI in the EU, which brings more duties.
Own it
If you know an industry from the inside, that knowledge is your edge. Start with one painful workflow in that industry, collect real cases as tests, and check early whether the use falls under high-risk rules.
Where it comes from
There is no standard definition. Menlo Ventures splits the application market into horizontal, departmental and vertical AI in 2025: The State of Generative AI in the Enterprise (December 2025), an investor report; Menlo holds stakes in AI companies.
