What is AI Wrapper?
A product that adds little more than an interface to someone else's AI model, and is easy to copy for that reason.
Wrapper is a term of criticism. It describes an application whose main value is an input box and a prompt in front of a model rented from a lab such as OpenAI, Anthropic or Google. When the lab ships the same feature in its own app, or a competitor copies the prompt, little is left.
Defensible applications own something the lab lacks: your customers' data and context, a place in the daily workflow, distribution and trust. Around the model they add retrieval of own data, guardrails, tests and workflow logic.
Why it matters for you
If you build on a model API, ask what remains when the model gets better and cheaper. Epoch AI measured that the price for a fixed level of model performance falls steeply every year, so access to a model alone protects no one.
Own it
Write down what your product knows or does that the model provider cannot copy in a weekend: data, workflow, customers, proven reliability. If the list is empty, change the product before you scale it.
Where it comes from
There is no authoritative definition; the word spread as criticism of early generative AI apps. In Who Owns the Generative AI Platform? (January 2023) investors at Andreessen Horowitz wrote that many apps were hard to tell apart because they relied on similar models, and that the market showed no systemic moats yet. Their 2026 consumer ranking shows the risk in practice: Midjourney fell from the top 10 to rank 46 after the big labs improved their own image generation.
