What is Model Provider?
The company or machine that runs the model for you: a cloud service or your own computer.
A model provider is whoever runs a model and returns its answers. Usually that is a cloud service from a model maker such as OpenAI, Anthropic, Google or Mistral. It can also be a cloud platform that hosts other companies' models, or your own machine running local AI.
The provider controls the practical terms: price per token, speed, uptime, which model versions are available, where data is processed and whether it is stored. The maker of a model and the provider running it are not always the same company.
Why it matters for you
Outages, rate limits, price changes and data processing rules all come from the provider, not the model. Read the terms on data use and storage location before sending anything confidential.
Own it
Ideally you can switch providers without rebuilding everything. Knowing which provider sits behind each of your AI tools is the first step to avoiding vendor lock-in.
Where it comes from
"Model provider" is industry language rather than a coined term. The pattern became mainstream on 11 June 2020, when OpenAI opened access to its models through the OpenAI API, a general-purpose "text in, text out" interface. Running a model for others as a service has since become its own business, with cloud platforms hosting many companies' models side by side.
