What is Data Sovereignty?

Keeping control over where your data lives, who can access it and under which laws.

Intermediate

Data sovereignty means you, not a vendor, decide what happens to your data: where it is stored and processed, who can access it, how long it is kept, whether it is used for training, and which country's laws apply.

With AI this becomes concrete. Every prompt, uploaded file and conversation is data sent to a model provider. In the EU, personal data is protected by the GDPR, and businesses also need to protect trade secrets and client confidentiality. Options range from European cloud regions and contractual guarantees to fully local AI.

Why it matters for you

Before your team uses an AI tool with customer or company data, know the answers: where is it processed, is it stored, is it used for training, and is there a data processing agreement?

Own it

Sovereignty is not all-or-nothing. Classify your data: public material can go anywhere, internal material needs a trusted provider, sensitive material may need to stay on your own infrastructure.

Where it comes from

The idea has no single author; it grew with cloud computing. Australia's Privacy Act of 1988 is an early national example, and the 2013 Snowden revelations about mass surveillance became a catalyst for worldwide debate, followed by the EU's GDPR. A parallel movement, Indigenous data sovereignty, insists that communities control data about themselves. Wikipedia: Data sovereignty
