What is Open-Weight Model?
A model whose trained parameters are published, so anyone can download and run it.
An open-weight model is a model whose parameters, also called weights, are released for download. Instead of only renting access through someone else's service, you can run the model yourself: on your own server, in your own cloud account, or on a laptop with local AI tools. Well-known families include Meta's Llama, Mistral's open models and many others published on platforms like Hugging Face.
"Open weights" is not the same as open-source AI. Publishing the weights lets you run and adapt a model, but usually not see the training data or the full recipe that produced it. Licences also differ a lot: some allow almost any use, others restrict commercial use, user numbers or certain applications. Always read the licence before you build on a model.
Open-weight models are typically a step behind the very largest closed models on the hardest tasks, but for many everyday jobs, such as summarising, drafting, classifying and extracting, they are more than good enough, and the gap moves quickly.
Why it matters for you
Open-weight models give you a real alternative to depending on a single company. You can choose where your data is processed, keep a model version stable for as long as you need it, run it without per-token fees once the hardware is paid for, and fine-tune it on your own examples. The trade-off is responsibility: you, or someone you hire, has to host, secure and update it.
Own it
This is the core of owning your AI. An open-weight model can't be withdrawn, repriced or silently changed by a provider overnight. Even if you mostly use a closed model today, knowing that an open-weight option works for your use case is your insurance against vendor lock-in.
Where it comes from
The term spread in 2023, after Meta shared the weights of its LLaMA models, to separate "you can download and run it" from full open-source AI. In July 2024 the US National Telecommunications and Information Administration published a report on models with widely available model weights and recommended monitoring rather than restricting them.
