AI Vocabulary · 08 Rules & Responsibility
What is Responsible AI?
Building and using AI in ways that are fair, safe, transparent and accountable, and to show it in daily practice.
Responsible AI is the umbrella term for the principles and practices that keep AI use fair, safe and trustworthy: avoiding harmful bias, protecting privacy, being transparent about where AI is used, keeping people accountable for decisions, and considering effects on employees, customers and the environment.
Many companies publish principles. The difference lies in practice: who reviews a new AI use case, what gets tested before launch, how problems are reported and fixed.
Why it matters for you
Customers, employees and partners increasingly ask how you use AI. A credible, simple answer builds trust; vague statements without practice damage it when something goes wrong.
Own it
Keep it proportionate and concrete: a short AI policy, a quick risk check before new uses that affect people, human oversight where decisions matter, and an easy way to report problems. Responsibility is something you do, not something you buy.
Where it comes from
"Responsible AI" has no single author; it grew as an umbrella term in the late 2010s as companies and governments published AI principles. A key international milestone was the OECD AI Principles, adopted in May 2019 as the first intergovernmental standard on AI, covering values like fairness, transparency, robustness and accountability. Many company frameworks echo them.
