What is Custom Assistant?
A reusable AI assistant set up with your own instructions, files and tools, such as GPTs, Projects or Gems.
Most AI apps let you build your own assistant without code. Depending on the app it may be called a GPT, a Project, a Gem or an agent. You give it standing instructions, which act as its system prompt, attach reference files and sometimes connect tools. Every conversation then starts with that context already in place.
Typical uses: a proposal writer that knows your offer, an onboarding buddy that knows your handbook, a reviewer that applies your checklist.
Why it matters for you
A custom assistant turns a good prompt into a reusable team tool. It saves repeating background, and it makes results more consistent across people.
Own it
Instructions and files inside one app are easy to lose when you switch tools. Keep the master version of your instructions and reference documents in your own personal knowledge base and copy them into whichever assistant you use.
Where it comes from
OpenAI made the idea mainstream when it announced GPTs at its first DevDay in November 2023: custom versions of ChatGPT with their own instructions, files and tools, built without code (Introducing GPTs). Other providers followed with similar features, such as Claude Projects and Gemini Gems, under different names.
