AI Vocabulary · 01 The Model
What is Frontier Model?
One of the most capable models available at a given moment, usually large, closed and run by a few major labs.
"Frontier model" describes the models at the leading edge of capability right now. They are usually the largest foundation models, trained by a handful of well-funded labs, and offered as cloud services by a model provider rather than for download.
The frontier moves fast. What counts as frontier this year is often matched by cheaper or open-weight models a year or two later. Claims about who leads are usually based on benchmarks, which only tell part of the story.
Why it matters for you
You don't always need the frontier. The strongest model shines on hard reasoning, complex code and long analysis. For routine tasks, a cheaper or smaller model is often just as good, faster and less expensive.
Own it
Treat frontier models as a tool you rent, not a foundation you depend on. Use them where they clearly earn their price, and test whether alternatives do the job for everything else.
Where it comes from
"Frontier" became the industry's word for the most capable models in 2023. On 26 July 2023, Anthropic, Google, Microsoft and OpenAI launched the Frontier Model Forum, describing frontier models as large-scale models that exceed the capabilities of the most advanced existing ones. Because the frontier keeps moving, today's frontier model is tomorrow's ordinary one.
